Atlanta, Georgia - June 20, 2024
Defending champions Argentina kicked off their Copa America title defense with a 2-0 victory over Canada at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Tuesday.
Lionel Messi's passing wizardry orchestrated Argentina's triumph, setting up both goals. Messi's pinpoint cross found Lautaro Martinez in the 35th minute, who headed home to give Argentina the lead.
Messi then turned provider again in the second half, assisting Angel Di Maria's stunning strike from outside the box in the 56th minute. Canada fought bravely but could not find a way past Argentina's resolute defense, led by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
The victory puts Argentina atop Group A, while Canada remains without points. The Canadians will next face Uruguay, while Argentina will take on Peru in their second group stage match.
