Islam Makhachev Submits Dustin Poirier to Retain Title in Final Round

UFC 302: Makhachev vs Poirier

Unpopular Champ Makhachev Dominates to Victory

Islam Makhachev, the lightweight champion, has retained his title by submitting his opponent, Dustin Poirier, in the final round of the main event of UFC 302. The fight took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on June 1, 2024.

Poirier, a former interim lightweight champion, gave a valiant effort but was outmatched by Makhachev's superior grappling skills. Makhachev took Poirier down several times throughout the fight, and eventually locked in a rear-naked choke in the final round to force the tap. This was the first time Poirier had reached the fourth round of an undisputed UFC title fight, but ultimately came up short.

Makhachev was not the most popular fighter going into the fight, but he proved his doubters wrong with his dominant performance. He is now undefeated in his last 12 fights, and has established himself as one of the most feared fighters in the UFC.
