Pogačar admits defeat in Tour de France title race

Slovenian rider crashes on key descent, hands title to Jonas Vingegaard

Tadej Pogačar's hopes of winning the 2022 Tour de France were dashed on Sunday after he crashed heavily on the descent of the Col de Spandelles. The Slovenian rider, who had been leading the race by a comfortable margin, was forced to abandon the stage and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Pogačar later admitted that his chances of winning the Tour de France were gone. "I gave it my all, but it wasn't enough," he said. "I crashed on the descent of the Col de Spandelles and I knew straight away that my race was over."

Pogačar's crash handed the Tour de France title to Jonas Vingegaard, who had been trailing the Slovenian by over three minutes. Vingegaard officially claimed his first Tour de France title on Sunday, becoming the first Danish rider to win the race since Bjarne Riis in 1996.
